The statement came after a gang of so called football hooligans who rioted on the day of the Scottish Cup final were jailed for a total of more than eight years. Contrary to some reports, none of those involved have any connection with Dundee United or supporters' organisations.
Director Derek Robertson said, "Dundee United totally condemns this type of mindless violence, especially when it masquerades as football related and attempts to damage the reputation of a football club - any football club. The reality is of course that these people have no more of an association with Dundee United than with any other team in the city, in Scotland or indeed, the UK.
None of those sentenced are season ticket holders at Tannadice, nor have they ever appeared on our supporters' database, nor are they members of any supporters' association. Anyone who knows anything about football will be well aware that at the time of this offence being committed genuine football supporters - especially Dundee United supporters - were more intent in getting in to Hampden for the eagerly awaited Scottish Cup Final.
These thugs merely use football as an excuse for violence and it would appear that they have received exactly what they deserve."
