YOUTHS DEFEATED 2-3 BY KILMARNOCK

1st October 2005

Just when the youths appeared on course to their first win of the season, Killie snatched a late winner in this morning's league meeting at North End Park.

It was the veritable game of two halves with the visitors taking advantage of the wind to establish a two-goal interval lead. However, with the Tannadice youngsters having got back on level terms just before the midpoint of the second half, they looked a good bet to go on and win, but instead Killie's Tommy Coyne headed in Loy cross nine minutes from the end. And it was the son of the former United striker who had given his side the lead after 19 minutes, hooking home Jordan Bryson's cross from the right.

Marco Andreoni almost equalised after 33 minutes when he robbed Rory Loy in middle of their half, but went on to fire past from the edge of the box. Two minutes from the interval, Bryson rifled in an angled shot from the edge of the penalty box to give the visitors a two-goal advantage. On the stroke of half-time Marco Andreoni and Robbie Feeney carved open the home defence, but Andreoni again failed to hit the target despite having a clear view of goal.

Twelve minutes after the re-start, Marco did find the net, getting the faintest of touches at the back post to Kieran McAleenan's inswinging corner from the left.
Ten minutes later, from an intricately worked free kick, Kieran McAleenan back-heeled to Gregg Burnett who blasted home from 25-yards.

A couple of minutes later, United had a fair shout for a penalty rejected after Ian Flannigan, standing on the line, appeared to keep out a Ryan O'Hara effort with his arm.

So it was a real sickener when Killie broke up the park for Tommy Coyne to bag his second of the match and what proved to be the winner.

Even then, Keith Watson almost rescued a point heading fractionally wide two minutes from the end.
