Dundee United, their supporters and Dundee City Council social work department, have teamed up to give disadvantaged children in the local community free season tickets for Tannadice. At Tannadice today, Dundee United Chairman Eddie Thompson, presented the first books issued under the United for Kids initiative to Social Work Convenor Helen Wright.
The
United for Kids appeal was suggested by an exiled Dundee United fan and launched at the end of June, with the Club pledging to match every penny donated to the appeal by fans. Such has been the response that over 100 season tickets will be made available for children whose circumstances would otherwise prevent them enjoying SPL football.
Bailie Helen Wright said, "This is a very generous gift from both club and fans and will allow many children, the opportunity to enjoy supporting their local football club. It is very satisfying to see the first tickets go to the Young Carers' Project who work with children who for many reasons find themselves in a 'caring' role within their own family. It is also gratifying to note that tickets will also be made available to children who are 'looked after' by the Social Work Department in children's homes or foster placements across the city."
Dundee United Chairman Eddie Thompson said, "I have been delighted, but not surprised, by the overwhelming response by our fans to this initiative. We take our role in the local community very seriously and wish to be as inclusive as possible. When one of our supporters suggested this initiative I had no hesitation in agreeing to take matters forward. These children are amongst some of the most vulnerable in our community and deserve this opportunity.
I would like to thank Dundee City Council Social Work Department for readily agreeing to assist us in the organisation and distribution of tickets and we look forward to a continuing relationship with them on this, and perhaps other, initiatives in the future. I would also like to thank our fans who once again have demonstrated their generosity and their commitment to the local community."
Dundee City Council's Social Work Department and Better Neighbourhood Services, 'Support for Young People' initiative, will now co-ordinate the distribution of tickets in partnership with the Club. Information has been circulated to over 100 local children's organisations giving details of how to apply for tickets.
