SPL SAFETY FOR UNITED AFTER WIN THROUGH LATE PENALTY

21st May 2005

A Barry Robson penalty ten minutes from time ensured that United will be playing SPL football next season. The large travelling band of Arabs can now look forward to next week's Cup Final at Hampden.

In all honesty it was a poor game played by a very nervous looking visiting side. The best chance of the first half was when Robson broke clear and squared the ball to Mark Kerr who had his shot well saved by Brown. Liam Fox also had a great effort which just went over the top of the crossbar for Caley.

The second half had very few talking points until the last ten minutes. On the 80th minute mark, Barry Robson collected the ball on the left and cut into the penalty area only to be upended by Tokely. The former Caley man stepped up himself and drilled the penalty home past Brown. The season saving penalty sparked a pitch invasion from the United supporters. Two minutes later Robson turned from hero to villain when he was sent off for his second booking of the afternoon. The game was played out in a carnival atmosphere with United knowing they were safe. When the whistle blew for full time the supporters again invaded the pitch.

On a nerve-jangling afternoon, United did not play particularly well but on the day all that mattered was the result. Barry Robson's penalty was excellently taken and he showed what he was made of.

Man of the match - There is only one winner of this. The twelfth man - the superb supporters who backed their side not only on the afternoon, but all season.
