Tony Docherty and David Bowman took the Reserve side west to face Rangers today and fielded what was in effect the Youth side against a more experienced Rangers line-up.
In a 3-5-2 formation, McLean was in goal behind a back line of Cameron, Abbot and Gardiner. In midfield, Callaghan was wide on the right with McAleenan on the left and Andreoni, Robertson and Burnett in the middle with Feeney and McDonald up front.
In a goalless first half United gave as good as they got with chances for both sides. For United, McDonald was unlucky with a clever lob that finished up just over the bar and Feeney had a great attempt from the edge of the area.
After the break the result could have gone either way with Burnett sending in a stinging volley and McAleenan coming close at the back post but it was Rangers who took the lead from the spot with only nine minutes left. After that, United were chasing an equaliser when Rangers grabbed a second to wrap up the points.
Several of these young players turned out against Celtic only two days ago and some will feature again in the final SPL Youth League match of the season on Saturday at Aberdeen. With this in mind, Tony Docherty was pleased with the team performance today. "It's a hectic period for us just now", he said "and after getting a creditable draw with Celtic only two days ago, I have to say that the players did very well today and were unfortunate to lose so near the end. They did everything we asked of them and I cannot fault them for their attitude and commitment."
