FORFARSHIRE SEMI FINAL WIN FOR UNITED

24th March 2005

For this evening's Forfarshire Cup semi-final tie, United fielded a strong line up in a 3-5-2 formation. Colgan was in goal with a back three of Kenneth, Ritchie and Archibald and across the midfield it was Cameron, Grady, Dodds McInnes and Robson. The strike pairing was Samuel and Scotland.

In a fairly even first half, Third Division Montrose gave as good as they got with Smith in particular causing the United rearguard problems. It was he who came closest for the home side when he hit the base of the post five minutes from the interval. For their part United had plenty possession but were unable to carve out a real goal scoring opportunity.

After the break United moved to a 4-4-2 set up and the effects were evident as the Tangerines had by far the better of the half but still they were not on target as often as they should have been and several good moves ended with players missing the target. The goal that settled the match came from a corner kick by substitute Callaghan who curled in a great ball for Kenneth to head home from close range.
