Euan McLean was in goal behind a back four of Gregg Burnett, Stuart Abbot, Ross Gardiner and William Easton. In midfield, Barry Callaghan, Marco Andreoni, David Robertson and Kieron McAleenan played whilst up front Nicky McDonald was joined by David Goodwillie.
The young Tangerines opened well and had the lion's share of play in the early part of the match. McDonald went very close to putting United in front on twenty minutes and shortly after that Goodwillie had a header cleared off the line. United's superior passing play lead to the opening goal just on the half hour mark when McDonald and Goodwillie combined well to find Callaghan, who supplied the cross for Robertson to head home.
It looked then as if the visitors would go in at the interval with a lead but Celtic managed to level just before the whistle when Kjartan headed home from a free kick.
In the second half United were unfortunate not to be awarded a penalty with ten minutes played when Robertson appeared to be brought down. As the second half progressed, Celtic became the stronger side and began to take control but the visitors held firm and McLean tipped over a free-kick at full stretch and that made sure that the young Tangerines came back to Tannadice with a deserved point. Second half substitutions saw Goodwillie replaced by David Gray mid way through the half and Matty Flynn came on for Andreoni with two minutes left.
