CALLAGHAN CALLS THE TUNE AS YOUTHS DEFEAT RANGERS

12th November 2004

Tony Docherty's Under-19 side lined up in a familiar 4-4-2 formation with Euan McLean in goal behind a back four of Stuart Abbot, Garry Kenneth, Ross Gardiner and Sean Fleming. The midfield four were David Robertson and Greg Cameron with William Easton wide left and Barry Callaghan wide right, whilst up front Joe Andrew partnered Nicky McDonald.

In a first half almost totally dominated by United, there were numerous chances created with Barry Callaghan in particular a constant thorn in the Rangers side. The young Tangerines opened the scoring on nineteen minutes when Robertson was well placed to score from an excellent Callaghan cross. Six minutes later, Callaghan supplied the ammunition again and this time Andrew finished the move. Almost right on the half time whistle, United went three up and it was that man Callaghan yet again with another cross that caused Rangers problems and it was knocked in by a home defender.

After the interval Rangers came out with determination as expected but the visitors weathered some ten minutes of early pressure before gradually taking control again. United had much more of the play and won several corners but were unable to convert their obvious superiority into goals and it ended with no further scoring. Graeme Liveston was at the match and afterwards he said "I've seen the Youth team play most of their games this term and I can honestly say they were outstanding this afternoon. It was the best performance I've seen from them this season."

Few teams will visit Murray Park this season and emerge with such a well-deserved 3-0 victory and Tony Docherty was fulsome in his praise for the side. After the match he said, "I challenged the lads today to get us off to a good start in the run of important games coming up just before the winter break, with the one today against Rangers being the first followed by Dunfermline and Hearts in the league and then Motherwell in the SFA Youth Cup. They have responded magnificently with a great performance and a well earned win against Rangers. The display was exceptional and the boys worked hard for each other to gain this result."

The Youth side have now played nine games in all, with six of these away from home. They have racked up five wins and a draw scoring 20 goals in the process and are well up with the leaders in the SPL Youth League.
