In a very familiar 4-4-2 line up, Lars Hirschfeld was in goal behind a back four of David McCracken, Garry Kenneth, Ross Gardiner and William Easton. In midfield Karim Kerkar got another outing and was joined by Mark Kerr, David Robertson and Stephen O'Donnell with the Trinidadian strike partnership of Jason Scotland and Collin Samuel up front. Hibs lined up a side with a similar mix of youth and experience.
Hibs were dangerous in spells but United were the better of the two sides and went in with a deserved first half lead of 2-0. Robertson netted the first on twenty-six minutes after Kerkar and Scotland had combined to set him up with the chance. Scotland scored a good second after he collected a long through ball from McCracken with ten minutes of the first period to go. Immediately thereafter both the goal scorers were replaced after taking knocks earlier and on came Joe Andrew for Scotland and Steven Bell for Robertson.
Hibs were more in the game in the second half as the play flowed from end to end but it was United who were the side in control and stretched their lead in seventy-two minutes when Andrew pounced to slam a loose ball high into the roof of the net after Hibs failed to deal with a Kerkar corner kick. The visitors pulled one back when Garry Smith hit a fierce shot that ended in the net after Dobbie may have got a slight touch. Hirschfeld managed a hand to it but could not keep it out.
In the end, it was a good result for United and a delighted Tony Docherty said after the match, "This result might take us to the top of the Reserve League and that is a great credit to the young lads in the team in particular. We looked quite comfortable in the first half today and deserved to be two up at half time and we controlled much of the game in the second half as well. I was a bit disappointed to lose a goal from a set play and that denied us a clean sheet but overall we are pleased with the performance." Tony went on to give particular mention on the performances of William Easton, Ross Gardiner and Collin Samuel but in singling them out for a mention he also stressed that every member of the team had played their part.
