Playing against the wind, United started positively but in the sixth minute an unenforced defensive error gave Boyd a free gift of a chance to put the home side 1-0 ahead.
United continued to have the bulk of play but in a rare attack, Dargo beat the offside trap to cross for Boyd to score in the 16th minute. Despite the 2-0 scoreline the game looked far from over and when Archibald bulleted home a great Robson corner in the 26th minute, it still looked winnable by United. But four minutes later Killie restored their two goal lead when United squandered possession in midfield and Boyd ran straight through to score his hat trick. Worse was to come before half time when Boyd scored his fourth from the penalty spot.
Manager Ian McCall rang the changes at half time and United looked much better organised in the second half. Dodds gave fans a lifeline of hope when he clawed a goal back in 78 minutes and the pressure was maintained with some good chances created to no avail.
In the dying minutes with United attacking, they were again caught out when Boyd finished off a slick attacking move to score his, and Kilmarnock's, fifth.
