DUFC 1 ABERDEEN 1

11th September 2004

United boss Ian McCall made one change to the line-up that faced Inverness Caledonian Thistle two weeks ago, with James Grady starting ahead of Jason Scotland who had been on international duty in the Caribbean. Visitors Aberdeen started the match with Darren Mackie and Michael Hart in the team in favour of John Stewart and Steven Tosh. A bumper crowd descended on Tannadice for what had become an eagerly anticipated contest, not least due to the start Aberdeen had made to the season. The Tangerines also viewed this fixture as an excellent opportunity to move up into one of the top positions within the SPL table.

The home side started the match very brightly and although no clear-cut chances were created, their intent to attack was clearly visible. United, however, fell behind in 7 minutes when Darren Mackie angled a finish beyond Tony Bullock after a counter attack. Jim McIntyre passed up a good chance five minutes later when he had his shot deflected wide as United tried to get back into the game. McIntyre again had a chance when Russell Anderson headed weakly towards goalkeeper David Preece, however, he could not direct an effort on goal. The closest the Terrors came to an equaliser was near the end of the half when Barry Robson's corner was touched onto the post by Preece, and when, after an almighty scramble in the box, a Chris Innes header was saved again by the keeper.

If the first half had been a relatively even contest, the second was a different story, with United very much the dominant force. Aberdeen did have an excellent chance when Steven Craig's scrambled effort was cleared by the United defence, however it was United who looked most likely to grab the next goal. There were chances for Grant Brebner and Jim McIntyre, however Robson was the nearest to scoring when his run and shot was smartly saved by Preece. When it appeared as though time was going to run out, United were given the best chance possible when Collin Samuel was tripped in the Aberdeen box. Mark Wilson was given the responsibility from the penalty spot and made no mistake, firing high into the net with 7 minutes remaining to ensure the game finished in a draw.

Both sides showed tremendous commitment in a match fought out in typical derby fashion. On the basis of chances created, it was the home side who were the more dominant, and had the equaliser come at an earlier stage they would have been confident of going on to win the match. Despite this, United can be pleased with the point considering Aberdeen's recent record and also the fact they had to overcome the loss of an early goal.
