The game took the format of three half hour sessions, allowing both Managers to try various players and permutations. As such, the scoreline was largely meaningless although this did not deter a very competitive and fit Queen's Park side.
Although United have only been back in training for just over a week, it was evident that the players were in good shape and in competitive mode. Certainly the Queen's Park trainer was kept busy and former United youth, Shaun Molloy was taken off with a suspected broken wrist.
One of the most pleasing aspects of the game for Manager Ian McCall was the performances of Mark Kerr and Mark Wilson together in central midfield. They played in this important area in the third period of the game and stepped up the tempo to dominate proceedings. This will be very encouraging news for all United fans.
United started off in a 4-4-2 formation. Bullock; Wilson, Innes, McCracken, Archibald; Kerr, Dodds, McInnes, Robson; Samuel, Grady. After the first half hour, this was changed to 3-5-2, with Scott Paterson and Andy McLaren replacing Kerr and Samuel, with Wilson moving into midfield. The lively Grady, making his debut for United, scored his first goal for the Club after good work by Andy McLaren in 42 minutes. Dodds also came close before veteran Ally Graham equalised for the Spiders.
In the final period, United reverted to 4-4-2, with Jarvie on for Bullock and Kerr and Wilson at the heart of midfield, with Samuel and Conway up front. Wilson and Duff combined to allow Holmes to drag the ball past the defence to hit home for a convincing, yet hard fought, victory.
