UNITED HOLD ON TO SECURE WIN

11th May 2004

United brought down the curtain on matches at Tannadice Park this season with an exciting if somewhat tense 3-2 win over fourth placed Scottish Cup Finalists Dunfermline.

The Tangerines stormed into a three goal lead within the opening third of the match and there appeared to be the possibility of Ian McCall's side securing their biggest win of the campaign in what was the last home match of the season.

Charlie Miller scored after eight minutes as the visitors attempted to clear the ball off the line however the ball appeared to have crossed the line and the Assistant Referee clearly indicated such and United were ahead. Innes secured the second heading in from a corner after twenty three minutes and Jason Scotland took advantage of a mistake by the Dunfermline defence to put his side three up seven minutes later.

If United fans in the six thousand attendance thought their team were home and dry then the East End Park side made them think again. Lee Bullen pulled a goal back in the thirty fourth minute to reduce the deficit to two at the interval. With less than a minute of the second half starting, Dunfermline pulled another goal back through Stevie Crawford.

Jimmy Calderwood's side pushed hard for an equaliser however United gradually came back into the game and Craig Easton, who had come on to rapturous applause when he replaced Derek McInnes just before the break, came close to hitting United's fourth with a powerful drive.

United held out for the three points to pull four points clear of fifth placed Motherwell. The Tangerines finished their home campaign with eight wins, four draws and just one defeat in the last thirteen matches at Tannadice.
