For this, the penultimate match of the SPL Under-21 League for the Tangerines, Owen Coyle again fielded a young side containing six players from the Youth squad, including Ross Gardiner and Gary Kenneth who have just returned from a trip to Slovakia with the Scotland Under-18s. The team was balanced with the experience of Stuart Duff and Jim Paterson along with regular Under-21 keeper Paul Jarvie and midfielder Graeme Holmes who has now made three substitute appearances at senior level this season.
Rangers got off to a good start with Adam netting within the first five minutes and from that point on the match swung from end to end until around ten minutes before the interval. Aaron Conway fired in a twenty-yard free kick and then the turning point of the match occurred: Adam was red-carded for a challenge on Conway and, within minutes, United had scored two more. Jarvis forced home the second and, for a 3-1 half time lead, Gary Kenneth chipped in United's third.
The second half saw United very much in the driving seat and they created numerous chances. It was no surprise therefore that they went further ahead when Jim Paterson netted a fourth only ten minutes into the half. Conway then capped off a fine performance with his second and United's fifth. United were well worth their win taking full advantage of the extra man and Jarvie in goal had nothing of note to deal with in the entire second half.
After the match Owen Coyle commented: "We thoroughly deserved to win today and I am absolutely delighted with the way the boys achieved the result. They were very professional and, even before the sending-off, we were in control despite being a goal behind. After that we completely dominated the match. These young players have done exceptionally well for us, finishing strongly in the Under-19 League and now doing the same in the Under-21 and it augurs well for the future."
