UNDER-21s DOMINATE AT DENS - BUT NO GOALS

26th April 2004

At Dens Park this afternoon, the last Under-21 derby of the season was played with neither side able to find the net. United fielded the more experienced of the sides with first team players Craig Easton, Jim Paterson, Stuart Duff and Collin Samuel joined by Paul Jarvie and six players from the Youth squad. Dundee's line-up contained mostly young players, only a handful of whom had any first team outings at all.

The early stages of the first half were quiet with neither side able to create any openings but after fifteen minutes or so United began to gain the upper hand. But it was the home side who had the first shot on goal, Jarvie holding comfortably from Linn. The Tangerines had the ball in the danger area often enough but genuine chances were few with Samuel shooting weakly for Soutar to save and Paterson had one deflected clear. Abbot blazed a shot over the top before Linn fired across goal when it looked easier to score. At the end of the first half Soutar saved a low angled drive from Jarvis.

The visitors were in almost total control after the beak with Dundee hardly able to get out of their own half and Paterson saw his early effort saved. Andrew had a shot blocked and Easton fired over while Conway had a number of opportunities either saved or off target and Paterson was also wide with his shot. In the end the points were shared but United had enough of the ball to put the result beyond doubt. Numerous good moves went unrewarded as Dundee defended well.

After the match Owen Coyle commented "We never scored today but in terms of play we totally dominated the match. Had we shown a little more composure and a bit of guile in front of goal we might have had three or four. The lad Soutar in their goal had a great game and made some good saves but I don't recall Paul Jarvie having to make one. I feel it was two points dropped because we had so much of the play and should have won but I can't fault our players for application and their attitude was excellent."
