UNDER-21s LOSE 3-0 TO KILMARNOCK

21st April 2004

For the final home match of the current season, United met Kilmarnock at Station Park Forfar and fielded a side containing nine players from the Youth squad. Only two players were over the age of nineteen, Paul Jarvie and Jim Paterson. Kilmarnock had the experience of Nish and McLaughlin but the majority of the side were younger players.

In the first half United did most of the pressing in a game hampered by a swirling wind. Paterson fired a shot over the top and had two others saved by the keeper whilst near the end of the half Andrew had his effort parried and when the loose ball fell to Jarvis he powered a shot narrowly past.

The second half opened with the wind more or less gone and Kilmarnock, who had threatened little in the first period, snatched a goal within five minutes when Canning latched on to a loose ball on the edge of the area and scored from twenty yards. Two minutes later the visitors were two up when Anderson was penalised in the box for a tackle on Nish who then fired the spot kick home himself. Nish scored the third from close range just on the hour. United tried to get something from the game but were unable to break down a stubborn Killie defence. Jarvis had one effort parried and in the final minute, a Paterson break was thwarted as the keeper rushed off his line and challenged.

A run of good results has ended with this defeat and United now face their final four games in the SPL Under-21 League away from home with the first of these at Dens Park on Monday afternoon.
