UNDER-19s PASS UP CHANCES AND LOSE LATE GOAL

21st February 2004

The Under-19 side met Livingston away from home this morning and despite dominating for virtually the entire match they were caught with sucker punch with around five minutes remaining and lost the match by that one goal. The United youngsters had created more than enough chances to win before conceding the late goal but were unable to find the net.

Three players from the Under-17 side were included in the starting line up in a 4-3-3 formation. McCurley (Under-17) was again in goal behind a back four of Abbot, Kenneth (Under-17), Gardiner and McAleenan (Under-17). The midfield trio was Smith, Jarvis and Bell with Andrew, Easton and Callaghan up front.

Coach Tony Docherty said after the match "I cannot believe we lost the game. The goal they scored was a terrible one from our point of view, especially after we had been pressing forward for most of the game. If we had won by three or four goals it would not have flattered us but we lost it at the end when the back players, who until then had been excellent, were punished for one moment of slack play."
