UNDER-21s TOO GOOD FOR ‘WELL

5th January 2004

The Under-21 side took on Motherwell at Tannadice tonight and both sides fielded teams made up of mostly young players. United were caught out early in the game when Wright latched on to a loose ball on the six yard line to fire low past Jarvie in the fourth minute. From that point on, however, it was very much all United with the Fir Park side kept to only a couple of half chances in the first half. United levelled on nineteen minutes when Miller scored from the spot after Samuel had been brought down and United had good efforts from Conway and Duff but it stayed level at the interval. The Tangerines went in front six minutes into the second period after a good run and cross from the left by Conway found the unmarked Miller who had travelled almost the length of the pitch to meet the ball and shoot home. Samuel made it 3-1 to the home side after the keeper fumbled and gifted him the opportunity on the hour mark. Anderson scored the fourth, blasting home from a corner kick as United kept up the pressure. There were more chances for the home side but it was the visitors who struck with the last kick of the ball. Wright outstripped the defence to fire low past Jarvie for a final score of United 4 Motherwell 2. After the match Owen Coyle said “I was delighted with the performance and the result which I felt we fully merited. It was an outstanding team performance and we saw a lot of good displays from individual players in an entertaining match.” Jarvie, Abbot, J Paterson (Ogunmade 64), Anderson (Smith 89), Gardiner, Easton, Duff, Miller, Samuel, Holmes, Conway (Robertson 75).
