An under-strength Youth side faced Hibs today without regular captain Steven Anderson and also without Gavin McCann, Steven Bell and Barry Callaghan.
In the early stages of the match, Hibs had more of the ball but United still created chances, with Gardiner out of luck when he headed just over from a Jarvis corner. Both Jarvis and Molloy delivered good crosses in, but no team mate was there to take advantage and United's attackers were frequently caught offside causing several promising passing moves to break down. Hibs were having their share of success too. McCann fired over the bar early on and then Band held a Weightman effort but, on sixteen minutes, the keeper could do little to prevent the same player giving the visitors the lead when he snapped up a loose ball and scored with a low-driven shot from twenty yards.
After that Hibs were in control for a spell and McCluskey volleyed well over the top. Band had to be alert twice to push away first a dangerous corner kick and then a low ball in. Midway through the half, the referee waved claims for a penalty aside when Conway (pictured) appeared to be pulled back when he was clean through. On thirty minutes, Band saved well from Pow and then at the other end, Conway worked hard to make room for a shot but it was blocked and McDonald was unlucky to hit the rebound just over. Five minutes later the same pair were involved as United engineered a good equaliser. Conway won the ball and flighted a crossfield pass to Jarvis who played the ball inside for McDonald to score from six yards. Conway had another chance on forty minutes but the keeper held it well and then Band was called in to action twice gathering first a free-kick and then a dangerous cross into the box. The half ended with a promising break forward by Robertson who then slipped the ball to McDonald but his shot was over the top.
Half Time
Dundee United 1 Hibernian 1
The second half was slow to get going and it was eight minutes old before either team had a shot on goal when Jarvis fired wide. Gary Kenneth made a couple of good clearances to thwart Hibs attacks and Band held an attempt from Fletcher who, a minute later, drew the keeper and slipped the ball goalwards only to watch Jarvis clear off the line. United almost snatched the lead when a short corner went to Easton and his well-flighted ball found Conway. The striker fed the ball to Jarvis but his shot was saved. The Tangerines then had another penalty claim denied, this time for handball, but it looked accidental. Hunter was marshalling the defence well and made one excellent headed interception when Hibs broke forward midway through the half. The outcome was settled in the course of a four-minute spell with fifteen minutes left. First, Pow released an unstoppable shot which gave his side back the lead and a minute later a fumble in the box allowed Weightman to tap home the loose ball for a two goal advantage. United responded with a great solo effort by Conway who ran down the right before cutting inside and firing past Brown. Easton then had a shot from close range held as United went all out for an equaliser that their play definitely deserved. However they were almost caught out when first Hunter had to rush back to head clear off the line and then Pow hit another thunderbolt but this time it hit the bar on its way over.
In the end, the 2-3 score line probably flatters Hibs slightly in that the game was very evenly balanced. Both sides were served up some entertaining football and the young Tangerines passed the ball about well and created several good chances. They deserved to take something from this match for the effort they showed but lost out in the end.
