YOUTH TEAM END FIRST HALF OF SEASON WITH A WIN

31st October 2003

The SPL Under-19 League reached the half way stage for the young Tangerines today and coach Tony Docherty fielded a team along similar lines to previous weeks. One new face in the line-up was Kenny Band who got his first league outing since joining the Club last month.

In the very first minute United broke through the Dunfermline rearguard and Kenny Jarvis was unlucky to hit the bar with his shot but the home side took a deserved lead when Conway made a good run in from the left and then beat Murdoch in the Pars' goal. Jarvis then had another run and shot but the keeper saved. United remained in control until mid way through the first half when Dunfermline came more into the match but even then they did not trouble Band as the defence, Andy Hunter in particular, mopped up the attacks. The visitors' best chance to equalise came in 35 minutes when Atha laid in a low driven cross but the ball ran just between McGuire and the United keeper as they both went for the ball. Approaching the interval, Robertson had a good shot on the turn saved after Conway and Jarvis had combined well to set him up and, in the last United attack of the half, Callaghan found Easton free at the far post but the latter just could not control the ball to get a shot in.

The second half opened with the home side in more determined mood and it took just ten minutes for United to double their lead. Great wing play by half time sub Nicky McDonald set up Jarvis for a far post cross to Easton and this time he had no trouble controlling a powerful volley into the net. In response Dunfermline's Smith fired in a shot but it was high and wide and then Band made a good save. As the half wore on United were more and more in command with McDonald unlucky to slip the ball inches wide when he was clean through. Jarvis hit a loose ball from the edge of the area but it cannoned off the bar, Anderson fired over the top and Conway saw his shot saved as United kept going forward.

Ten minutes from the end the home side had the ball in the net again but unfairly said the referee and it was not allowed. Andy Hunter (pictured) was next to get in on the action and his run and shot from 25 yards was saved by the keeper as he rushed out to narrow the angle and finally Anderson headed over from a corner.

United were well worth their win today and Tony Docherty was pleased with the performance. "I thought we started the game very well and I was keen to see how the boys would react after the disappointment of losing to Dundee last week. The first twenty minutes we were excellent, creating a few chances and hitting the bar and of course Aaron Conway scored a great goal. We then took the foot of the gas a bit and that let them back into the game. I made a couple of changes at half time and we were in complete control in for most of the second half. We now go forward into the BP Youth Cup match at Tannadice on Wednesday night after a good performance and a good result."
