Dundee United's Under-21 side had an afternoon kick-off today at Fir Park where they played their Motherwell counterparts. Lining up in a familiar 4-3-1-2 formation, Paul Gallacher was again in goal behind Mark Wilson at right back, Gary Bollan at left back and a central pairing of Steven Anderson and Ross Gardiner. In midfield Craig Easton, Graeme Holmes and Steven Bell linked with Billy Dodds in a free role behind a strike pairing of Stephen McGowan and player/coach Owen Coyle.
The first half produced some entertaining football from both sides and United deservedly went ahead after some excellent build-up play on the right ended with Wilson playing a fantastic ball into box and Coyle was in the right place to get on the end of it and put the Tangerines ahead.
The second goal was worked down the opposite wing in the second half and this time it was McGowan, playing one of his best games at Under-21 level, who produced an excellent through-ball for Coyle to get his and United's second. That was how it ended, with a 2-0 for the Tangerines, a result which lifts the Under-21s from the foot of their league.
After the match Owen Coyle was rightly pleased with the performance and he said. "The win was thoroughly deserved and very comfortable against a well organised Motherwell. I have to say there were some excellent performances from our young players, particularly the two lads Anderson and Gardiner from the Under-19 side, who played very well in central defence. There were some excellent performances throughout the side with the more experienced players showing a great attitude and giving the younger lads lots of help and encouragement."
