LATE GOAL GIVES UNDER-21s A SHARE OF THE SPOILS

20th October 2003

Dundee United's Under-21 side travelled to Station Park, Forfar to meet Aberdeen tonight. Lining up in a now familiar 3-5-2 formation, Paul Jarvie was in goal behind a back three of Danny Griffin, Steven Anderson and Gary Bollan. The left wing back was Barry Robson with Barry Callaghan on the opposite side whilst Steven Bell, Mark Kerr and Graeme Holmes took the midfield berths. The font pairing was Owen Coyle and Jason Scotland.

The first half produced good passing football from United throughout but what was lacking was a good final ball and several chances were missed. Scotland had a couple of early shots but he failed to hit the target and Coyle saw a couple of efforts saved. Aberdeen played well only in patches and indeed it was a full half hour before they produced a move of any note when Morrison blasted a shot which was blocked and late in the half the visitors came more into the game with Soutar having a shot held by Jarvie whilst Hinds fired wide.

Four minutes into the second half the course of the match change when Stephen Payne of Aberdeen was sent off. From that point on United were in complete command and only some excellent goalkeeping by Hutton prevented United going ahead from a number of well-worked goal scoring opportunities. Griffin, Anderson, Coyle and Kerr were all denied and then the game was turned on its head with only fifteen minutes left. United were caught out by a quick Dons counter attack and Hinds fired past Jarvie from just inside the box after beating Griffin one on one. The Tangerines created more chances and finally got the goal they deserved seven minutes from the end when Scotland (pictured) scored from close range from a Bell knock down. In the last minute, Kerr fired in a fierce drive from outside the box and the keeper could only parry. Scotland was first to react but missed the chance to net a winner when he fired wide from almost point blank range.

Owen Coyle praised the Aberdeen keeper after the game and said "Their keeper had four or five wonderful saves and I have to give him credit for that. Equally, I was pleased that we created so many opportunities and the players showed the right attitude. There were several good performances with Mark Kerr and Graeme Holmes doing well. We perhaps lost a bit of concentration at the back and gave away a fairly soft goal when they broke away but really we should have been well ahead by that time anyway. Three or four goals would not have flattered us tonight."
