The line-up for the league match today at Motherwell was along similar lines to previous matches with Gavin McCann in goal behind a back three of Hunter, Anderson and Gardiner. Coach Tony Docherty went with Callaghan in the right wing back role and Jarvis on the left with Bell, Craig and Robertson making up the midfield. Up front Conway partnered McDonald. On the bench was recently signed new keeper Kenny Band alongside Molloy, Smith, Abbot and Easton.
The first half saw the young Tangerines almost in complete command but unable to convert a number of good goal-scoring opportunities. Conway missed a couple of chances and Jarvis and McDonald were also out of luck.
In the second half, Motherwell took the lead after only ten minutes when the home side's centre forward got in between McCann and one of his defenders to get a toe to the ball to poke it home. After that United tried everything to get back into the game and Smith, Abbot and Easton were all brought on to try to freshen things up and keep the pressure on the home side. However, reminiscent of the senior side's game, Motherwell caught the Tangerines going forward to break upfield for a second with only two minutes left, again very much against the run of play.
"This is yet another game where we dominated but failed to take our chances and lost the first goal against the run of play. Our back three were very strong and Steven Anderson (pictured) played particularly well but we just could not break down their defence," said Tony Docherty after the game. "But there was the pleasing aspect that the boys put in a good performance and we will try to build on that."
