UNITED WIN COMFORTABLY OVER MORTON

23rd September 2003

Versus CIS Cup opponents Greenock Morton, Ian McCall deployed the same line-up which recorded United's first SPL win this season at Partick on Saturday.

In a lively first half, both sides had early chances with Bullock having to save twice before McLaren opened United's account on 10 minutes when he headed home from a corner. Miller and McIntyre both missed chances and the visitors hit the bar with twenty minutes played. They then had a good spell midway through the half but United began to take charge and Miller, McInnes and McIntyre all had good attempts saved. On 36 minutes, United went two ahead when McIntyre headed on an excellent cross into the net.

The second half was a fairly even contest, and the visitors had their share of the play, but only in spells. For United, McLaren put some good work in and, with better luck, his crosses could have paid dividends. Scotland was giving the Morton defence problems but the visitors were still troublesome and, with 15 minutes left, they pulled one back when a ball over the top beat the United defence and Weatherston broke forward to score. United were still struggling to cope with this lively Morton attack but when Samuel was fouled in the box, a penalty was awarded, albeit soft. McIntyre chipped in a cheeky spot-kick and a few minutes later he hit the post, but the match ended with United 3-1 winners.
