At Glenesk Park this afternoon the Dundee United Under-19 side fell to a 2-0 defeat inflicted by a Livingston side who were only a threat in the game for brief periods.
In a goalless first half, United played the better football and the young Tangerines put together some excellent passing moves but unfortunately most of these lacked a good final ball and several goal scoring opportunities were missed. Early in the half United were pressing hard and the visitors were lucky to see the ball bounce off a post during a goalmouth scramble. Callaghan then fired straight at the Livingston keeper and after a series of corners, Anderson headed wide. Livingston were relying on the long high ball and towards the end of the half they were beginning to get into a game in which they had shown very little in attack. McCann (pictured) in the United goal had to be alert to twice collect dangerous crosses. The last action of the half saw Hunter head for goal from a corner but his effort was held.
The second half began with United on the offensive again with the West Lothian youngsters trying to catch the home side on the counter attack. Craig was first to go for goal in the second period, after good work by Callaghan, but the keeper gathered his snap shot. Andrew then accidentally blocked a shot from one of his own players after a fine passing move involving half the United team and the same player missed a chance shortly after that. With the home side pressing, the visitors broke forward and won a corner with around ten minutes of the half gone. From the kick, they scored through Martin Scott to take a lead very much against the run of play and with their first attempt on target. United responded and Easton put in a very good cross but there were no takers and with 15 minutes of the half gone a pass back to McCann was poorly controlled by the keeper. As he tried to clear, the ball rebounded off Livi attacker Gary Miller who then slotted in to an empty net. From then on the United youngsters were fighting an uphill battle and although they tried hard they could not find a way past the visitors' defence. Livingston in fact nearly scored a third when the ball came off the post and for United, Molloy fired in a good effort without success.
It was not United's day and coach Tony Docherty must be wondering what his side have to do to get points as, not for the first time this season, they were beaten in a game in which they had more of the ball, created more chances and played the better football. Tony said later that he felt his side had been punished again for the missed chances and again the side lost a goal that was avoidable.
