LATE PENALTY GIVES UNDER-19s DESERVED THREE POINTS

23rd August 2003

With a 10.00am kick-off at a sunny Glenesk, United's Under-19s played Hearts and emerged the winners thanks to a penalty scored by Steven Craig (pictured) with ten minutes left.

A goalless first half saw plenty of action and some good passing play by both sides but neither was able to find a route to goal. The closest United managed was a Conway header at the back post that went wide from a Jarvis free-kick and a Callaghan free-kick which was deflected for a corner. But too often the young Tangerines forwards were caught offside. For their part, Hearts matched United and Strickland was unlucky to see his shot come back off a post and Wallace produced a good save from McCann.

Despite the growing heat, the second half was a much livelier affair and United were the better side. Conway broke through twice early on but could not find a finish and he also combined well with Jarvis to set up Easton who then had his powerful shot from outside the box tipped over. Easton fired in again minutes later but his effort was deflected by a defender and Hearts keeper Windrum did well to save. Roberston was just inches wide with a 20 yard shot and Callaghan set up Molloy who also saw his attempt deflected wide. It was not all going United's way and Hearts had a couple of near things in the United box but the defence stood firm.

The match was settled after Jarvis was brought down and Craig confidently netted from the spot but keeper McCann has to be thanked for a great tip over save from Strickland in the dying minutes of the match.

This was a good result for a United side that played well as a unit and coach Tony Docherty was pleased to get the team's first win of the season. He was also full of praise for an excellent team performance, making particular mention of the contribution from Ross Gardiner and Kenny Jarvis and also Steven Craig when he came on as a substitute and scored. Tony also said he was pleased with the progress of all the young players who have just come into the side this season.
