UNITED SIGN ANDY McLAREN

28th August 2003

Dundee United signed today former Tannadice favourite Andy McLaren on a short-term contract.

Andy has been a free agent since leaving Kilmarnock at the end of last season. He was recently offered training facilities at Dundee United to give him the opportunity to get back to match fitness.

Andy impressed the management team during his training spell and they decided to give him a four-month contract, which would allow them to see him in more competitive situations.

McLaren is Ian McCall's eleventh signing since he took over at the end of January and the tenth for the new SPL campaign. Still only thirty years of age, he retains a high level of skill now augmented with additional experience.

Andy McLaren first signed for United from Rangers Amateur Boys Club in June 1989 days after his sixteenth birthday and remained with the Tannadice outfit for the next ten years. He made his first team debut at the beginning of season 1991-92 and in his first spell with the Terrors he made 191 appearances scoring 18 times. During this time he also picked up a Scottish Cup winners medal in the 1994 Final victory over Rangers.

After he left Tannadice, Andy spent a year with Reading where he made only eleven appearances scoring once. During his spell there he was loaned out to Livingston for two months at the end of 1999. In June 2000 he returned to Scotland and for a while was linked with a move back to United, but instead he went to Kilmarnock where stayed until his contract expired last season. In 97 games for the Ayrshire side Andy scored 13 times. Since then he has had trials at both Hibs and Falkirk.

International success has not completely eluded the talented forward but he has played only once for the national side, coming on as a second half substitute in a 1-1 draw in the friendly match against Poland in April 2001.
