LIVELY UNITED RUN OUT OF STEAM

9th August 2003

A match that promised so much for United ended in severe disappointment as the Tangerines surrendered a one-goal advantage to lose to a Tom McManus converted penalty in the last five minutes of a lively encounter played in brilliant sunshine.

Another scorching hot and sunny day brought an excellent near ten thousand attendance, with Hibs bringing in excess of two thousand supporters to Tannadice. Anticipation was high amongst Arabs that this was the match that would mark the beginning of a season where United would be challenging for a top six position. For a large period of the match, United looked as if they would fulfil the expectations of the large home support and when Collin Samuel put Ian McCall's men ahead minutes into the second half, it all looked positive. Half way through the second period, United appeared to lose control of the midfield and with fifteen minutes remaining, Derek Riordan equalised for the visitors when he connected with a cross ball at the far post.

With five minutes remaining, the referee awarded Hibs a penalty for an offence by Barry Robson with the recent signing from Inverness CT being sent off.

United looked unlikely to get back into the match in the final minutes. The nearest they came was when Samuel fired an inviting ball across goal however there were no players in Tangerine on hand to take advantage.

In his post match interview, Ian McCall confirmed that he thought his side had dominated for the first sixty five minutes but that some of his players who had not trained for most of the week due to knocks had tired.

United now face three very difficult matches in the SPL in the weeks ahead and the optimism of pre-season now faces a stiff challenge in the weeks ahead.
