For this the first of United's home games at Station Park Forfar, player/coach Owen Coyle fielded Tony Bullock in goal with a back three of Mark Wilson, Steven Anderson and Gary Bollan. The wing backs were Danny Ogunmade on the right and Barry Robson on the left with Steven Bell and Graeme Holmes in the middle and Owen Coyle linking with the twin strikers, Jason Scotland and Jim McIntyre.
Both sides began the match in determined fashion and had early chances but United opened the scoring when Robson released Scotland with an intelligent pass over the defence and the Trinidadian striker burst forward, rounding the keeper before slotting the ball home. As the half progressed Bell, Wilson and Scotland all had further goal attempts for United whilst Celtic's Beattie and Fernandez both had their efforts thwarted by the United defence. In the dying seconds of the first half Petta beat three United players and fired in a shot which Bullock held but then the referee awarded a penalty which Prunty netted sending Bullock the wrong way.
Ten minutes into the second half Celtic took the lead when Petta picked up a slack clearance by the home defence and he fired home an angled drive into the far corner from 20 yards out. United were giving as good as they got and five minutes later Robson equalised as he latched on to a great pass to run 40 yards before beating the keeper from just inside the box. With both sides going for a winner Celtic won a free kick with only ten minutes left and up stepped McManus to curl an unstoppable effort beyond Bullock. Even then United had chances to draw level again but it was not to be and the match ended with Celtic the winners by the odd goal in five.
After the match, Owen Coyle said he felt that United finished the stronger side and were more than a little unlucky to have lost this fixture. Despite losing he was pleased with the overall performance from the players, particularly the younger ones.
