Ian McCall is forced into one change as Barry Robson is unavailable through suspension. His place is taken by Danny Griffin(pictured) while David McCracken is recalled to the defence to fill the gap left by Griffin.
Despite getting off to a good start with a Griffin header cleared off the line in the first ten minutes, it was the home side who took control and dominated most of the first half. The Tangerines had no more goal efforts whilst Celtic had several chances and scored from three of these. Their first was a Maloney goal in eleven minutes from a Larsson cross and the second was bundled in from close range by Agathe. United's cause was further hindered after a controversial penalty was awarded in injury time in the first half as Larsson went down to a Gallacher challenged. Thompson powered home from the spot kick to send the visitors in 3-0 up at half time.
Although the one-way traffic of the first half was halted and United saw much more of the ball in the second period, the visitors never seriously threatened the Celtic rearguard and when McNamara thundered home a fourth mid way through the half, any prospect of a fightback by the Tangerines ended. As the game drifted to its conclusion with United chasing a consolation goal, a Celtic counter attack beat the offside trap and Larsson found himself in the clear with only the keeper to beat and he lifted the ball over Gallacher for a final score of 5-0 to the home side.
