UNITED TO KICK RACISM OUT

7th August 2003

Dundee United Directors, Management, players and fans are all united in the Club's policy to eliminate racism in football.

Towards the end of last season, the Dundee United Supporters' Trust ,'ArabTRUST', helped the Club draw up a Supporters' Charter with complementary equal opportunity and anti-racism policies. These were adopted unanimously by the Board and, indeed, are now being used by the SFA as best practice examples for clubs throughout Scotland. In view of recent worrying reports of racist groups planning to target football supporters, the Club has moved swiftly to highlight and publicise their United stance on this issue.

Manager Ian McCall said, "Racism should not be tolerated by society as a whole and certainly has no part in football. Any attempt to introduce this element to our game must be vigorously resisted and the players and management team strongly support the Club's policy in this regard. I am delighted to see our fans here today to make their views clearly known. Knowing them now as I do, I would expect nothing less."

Dundee United Director Derek Robertson said, "The Supporters' Charter was developed in consultation with the Trust and sets out our obligations and responsibilities towards our supporters and the local community. One of our aims is to encourage wider participation in both playing and spectating, particularly in minority groups.

"Our equal opportunities and anti-racism policies now underpin these aims and we are indebted to the Trust for their assistance in this. While we are not aware of any current problems in this area at the Club, we cannot afford to be complacent. Everyone should be fully aware of the Club's policy on these matters. Anyone found guilty of a racist offence at Tannadice will be dealt with. This Club condemns racism in any form on or off the pitch."

Mike Watson, MSP, former Minister of Sport, said, "As the Minister responsible for securing the establishment of supporters' trusts in Scotland, I am particularly pleased to see ArabTRUST take such a positive and constructive role in these matters. Racism in sport must be eliminated and I am pleased to see Dundee United and its fans lead by example on this issue."

Mike Barile, Interim Chairman of ArabTRUST said, "We are positive that all Dundee United supporters will be happy to comply with this policy. I would hope that any incidents of racist abuse either home or away would be reported to the police or stewards."

THE DUNDEE UNITED FOOTBALL COMPANY LIMITED ANTI-RACISM POLICY

This policy is designed to provide clarity to employees, stakeholders, supporters and everyone connected with The Dundee United Football Company Limited ("The Club") on the Club's attitude to issues of racial harassment and abuse. It is further designed to promote good relations between persons of different ethnic or national groups and to preserve the good name of Dundee United. The main elements of the policy include the following;

1. The Club condemns racism in any form, either on or off the pitch. The Club aims to create and maintain a working and spectating environment free from racial harassment and abuse. Everyone connected with the Club has a responsibility to prevent racial harassment or abuse.

2. A racist incident is defined by the Club as any incident that is perceived to be racist by the victim, or any other person. Racial harassment is defined by the Club to be any verbal, physical, written or visible abuse that is based on a person's race, ethnic background, colour, nationality, language or cultural background - and is considered to be unwanted, unacceptable and offensive to the person.

3. Proven racial harassment or abuse will lead to action being taken against employees. Similarly, such behaviour by a spectator will be reported to the police and may result in a life ban from the Club. The Club will give their full support to the police in any criminal actions.

4. All employees have a responsibility to make it clear that such behaviour by anyone connected with the Club is unacceptable.

5. Supporters will also be informed on a regular basis that racist taunts and abusive or threatening behaviour will not be tolerated by the Club and will be encouraged to condemn and report such behaviour.

6. Any supporters (home or visiting) behaving in this way will be detained by stewards, passed to the police and may be arrested. Season ticket holders detained for such a reason, face having their season ticket revoked and all spectators detained in this way face a life ban from the stadium.
