LORD WATSON APPOINTED TO BOARD OF DUNDEE UNITED

29th August 2003

Lord Watson of Invergowrie (Mike Watson, MSP), the former Scottish Executive Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport was today (Friday, 29th August) appointed a Director of Dundee United Football Club.

A committed supporter of Dundee United, Mike has been a season ticket holder since 1981 and has written two books about the Club - Rags to Riches - the official history of DUFC; and The Tannadice Encyclopaedia - an A-Z of Dundee United. He was also responsible for the creation of the original Dundee United fanzine, The Final Hurdle.

He said, "It is an overused expression but it really is a great honour to be appointed a Director and to become an active part of the new Dundee United. Although it has been a difficult start to the season it does not affect my firm belief that this Club is ready once again to be a major force in Scottish football.

"I hope to play a pro-active role in the Boardroom not least in the politics involved in professional football these days and within the various areas of European regulation being introduced on an almost daily basis by UEFA.

"This is a very proud moment for me and I would like to thank United Chairman Eddie Thompson and his other Directors, firstly for making this possible and secondly for having the confidence that I will be able to make a telling contribution to the future of the Club."

Eddie Thompson, Chairman of Dundee United said, "I have known Mike for many years and like myself he is totally committed to the Dundee United cause. He brings additional experience at many levels to our Board and his advice especially in the area of legislation at local government, Scottish and European levels will be particularly invaluable."
