DUNDEE UNITED UNVEIL JERRY KERR STAND SIGN

28th July 2003

Dundee United Chairman Eddie Thompson today took the opportunity to show the family of former Manager Jerry Kerr the new sign on the outside of the Main Stand at Tannadice, in advance of the formal naming ceremony which will take place at half time during the friendly against Everton on Wednesday 30th July 2003.

Mr Thompson said, "As the sign is not visible from inside the ground, it was thought appropriate to invite the family to view this very visible dedication in advance of the formal naming ceremony. A presentation will be made to the Kerr family on the pitch at half time on Wednesday and I am very pleased to say that many former players from Jerry Kerr's time at Tannadice will also attend the ceremony. I am delighted to be able to honour Jerry Kerr's outstanding contribution to the Club in this way, and the fact that so many of his former players have accepted our invitation to attend is testimony to the respect and affection in which his memory is held."

Former players and colleagues attending the ceremony include Jimmy Briggs, Kenny Cameron, Doug Cowie, Stewart Fraser, Jim Henry, Donald Mackay, Hamish McAlpine, Jimmy Millar, Frank Munro, Andy Rolland, Doug Smith, Walter Smith, Joe White and Sandy White. Other invited guests include representatives from the Federation of Dundee United Supporters' Clubs, who requested the Club to honour Mr Kerr in this way and who have donated a commemorative trophy to be retained within the Tannadice boardroom to mark the occasion.

Gil Kerr, Jerry Kerr's son, said, "The family are delighted that Dundee United have agreed to do this, especially as this stand in particular has very close associations with our father. We are looking forward to the occasion and to meeting up with old friends. We would like to thank Mr Thompson and the Board of Directors for all of the arrangements which have been made. We would also like to thank the Federation and the fans for putting this suggestion forward in the first place. Our father always held a deep affection for Dundee United fans and never really got the opportunity to say farewell when he left the Club."

Mike Barile, Chairman of the Federation added, "We were very pleased that the Board agreed so readily to our request. Jerry Kerr made an outstanding contribution to the success of this Club and it is highly appropriate that this is marked in this way. We would also like to thank the Taxi Drivers' Club for their generous assistance in providing us with the commemorative trophy to present to the Club to mark the occasion. We are all looking forward to seeing so many former favourites at the ceremony on Wednesday and I hope that all Arabs will take this opportunity to pay their respects to them and, of course, to the memory of Jerry Kerr."
