HOLMES THE PROVIDER FOR UNDER-18s WIN

2nd May 2003

On a cold afternoon at North End Park toady, there was little for either side to shout about in the first half although United came closest with attempts from McGowan and Anderson in the first half hour and then Conway and Bell near the interval. Killie could manage only two shots, one of which was well over the top and the other was dealt with easily by Bruce in United's goal.

There was much more action in the second period and the young Tangerines took a deserved lead on 59 minutes when a well-executed free-kick from Holmes was headed home by Anderson at the far post. McGowan then fired wide before an all-action last ten minutes first saw Bruce tip over a net-bound Killie effort and then save from a spot kick on 80 minutes after the referee had adjudged a United player had committed an infringement in the box. Then both McGowan and Holmes each missed a good opportunity to put the outcome beyond doubt before Conway finally made sure of the points firing home from around 10 yards after a Holmes corner was not properly cleared by the visitors. Immediately after that, the referee showed the Killie keeper a straight red card for comments made following the goal.

United: Bruce, Hunter, Anderson, Hardie. Allum, Bell, Holmes (Lau 87), Jarvis (McDonald 70), Malloy (Craig 63), Conway, McGowan.

Unused Subs: Black, Andrew.
