OWN GOAL SETTLES UNDER-18s DERBY

9th May 2003

At a windy Glenesk Park, United lined up with three players promoted from theUnder-16 squad, Ross Gardiner in defence along with Barry Callaghan, and Scott Smith in the attack.

In an evenly balanced first half there was little to choose between the sides and in the early stages Linn of Dundee was creating a lot of problems for the young Tangerines' defence but it was the Tannadice outfit who took the lead with just over half an hour gone. A Holmes free kick was perfectly flighted into a crowded penalty area for Anderson (pictured) to head across goal and score in off the post. Minutes later Bell was inches away from connecting with another ball in for Holmes before United had a narrow escape just before half time at the other end with a goal line clearance needed after Bruce was beaten.

Half Time United 1 Dundee 0

The Dens Park youngsters worked an equaliser within seven minutes of the second half gone and it was Hegarty who crashed a drive into the net via an upright. The Dark Blues then wasted two good opportunities from free-kicks before a Conway shot was fired just over the top. With around ten minutes left, Dundee took the lead. There was no apparent danger as the ball broke through in the United box but as Bruce came for the ball the unfortunate Lau in attempting to nod back to the keeper, only succeeded in finding his own net. United played out the last few minutes with only ten men as Anderson had to go off for attention to a head wound and Jarvis was twice unlucky not to level the match in the dying minutes.
