Rangers took the lead through De Boer in just eight minutes and ten minutes later United's problems were doubled when Arveladze made it two. Mark Wilson hit the bar as United tried to reduce the deficit but the game was put virtually beyond the Tangerines reach with De Boer's second on the stroke of half time.
A three goal first half lead looked to be too much for United to turn around but with the introduction of Billy Dodds early in the second half they had a real go at the Ibrox side. Russell Latapy and Jim McIntyre both had good efforts saved by Klos, but Rangers carved open the chance for Arveladze to get his second and Rangers fourth. United though, never gave up and responded immediately with what transpired to be a consolation goal only when Dodds bundled the ball over from a Gary Bolan header on. The home side had further chances including a Paterson effort which Klos pushed away for a corner.
Overall, Rangers were the better side but United never gave up and were worthy of at least a goal or two more for the effort the players put in, especially in the second half.
United now wait a fortnight before they resume the last five fixtures as they struggle to stay above the 12th position in the League.
