UNDER-18s WIN YOUTH LEAGUE DERBY

11th March 2003

United's Under-18 side were still smarting from the heavy 5-2 defeat at the hands of Hibernian on Saturday as they faced local rivals Dundee in what is always a keenly contested event, no matter the level.

It was the Dens Park side that took a second minute lead through Hegarty, who headed home from close range at the far post from a long throw in by McNally. The young Dark Blues had the benefit of a strong wind in the first half but were unable to take full advantage, and United levelled the score just before the half time whistle. Steven Bell crossed to the far post for Sean Callaghan to head home.

In the second half, with only five minutes played, the young Tangerines took the lead. Alexander McMillan found Steven Anderson with a corner kick to the back post and, although the young central defender's header was blocked, Joseph Andrew (pictured) was well placed to force home the rebound. The Tannadice youngsters made sure of all three points on 70 minutes with a third goal. The Dundee goalkeeper made a mess of a clearance, which landed at the feet of Kenny Jarvis. The midfielder elected to shoot from all of thirty yards, and he found the top corner of the net. Dundee tried hard to take something from the game in the closing stages but it was not to be, and United ran out winners.
