For today's game, Charlie Miller was suspended, and Andy Tod lined up in attack as the surprise choice alongside Billy Dodds. Paul Gallacher retained the goalkeeper's jersey. Aberdeen made five changes from the side that lost 1-0 at home to Partick Thistle including the addition of Payne and O'Donoghue, making their first team debuts.
Neither side created much of a goal threat in the first half and it was Aberdeen who took the lead, courtesy of a penalty from Sheerin; he had gone down the box after a clumsy challenge by Jim McIntyre. Earlier Gallacher had to be alert to a wayward Gary Bollan header and D'Jaffo could have extended their lead when Gary Bollan stumbled in the box, but the shot was deflected for a corner. The last action of the half saw Dodds with a shot on target saved, but he was flagged offside in any event.
The second half followed much the same pattern as the first and Billy Dodds was unlucky not to restore parity with a close range attempt from a flick-on. Five minutes later United were to rue that missed opportunity when Aberdeen increased their lead. A Mark Wilson error left D'Jaffo in the clear and when he eventually found Sheerin in acres of space the former Ayr man beat Gallacher from 10 yards. Two minutes later it was all over for United as Aberdeen went three up when McGuire, at the far post, headed in a Payne free-kick. Near the end, Gallacher pushed a Payne dipping cross to safety, and the best United could muster was a Smart shot which Preece had to gather at the second attempt, with McIntyre charging in.
On a windy day with both teams employing the long ball tactic, it always looked like the first team to score would take the game. And so it was, and while Aberdeen grew in confidence United failed to pose enough of a serious goal threat.
