For the start of this Under-21 clash at Fir Park, a very much changed Dundee United eleven lined up in comparison to the team fielded versus city rivals Dundee the previous Monday at Tannadice. Manager Ian McCall would want to take a look at as many players as possible prior to the game against Dunfermline on Saturday, and also give some of the potential first team candidates more match practice.
Conditions at Motherwell were far from ideal with the pitch still heavily sanded, and both teams found it difficult to adapt. The home side were first to score with a strike from Dempsie, after the Tangerines failed to clear properly from a corner. In the second half United were much improved and, from a long clearance by Combe, Hamilton found Stephen McGowan who scored after rounding the goalkeeper. Kenny Jarvis (pictured) put United ahead from a cross from McGowan after another long kick out from Combe, and United looked to be heading for victory. But with only a couple of minutes left, Motherwell scored through Khemas to equalise.
