United moved into the quarter-finals of the CIS Cup this evening with a 2-1 win over Airdrie United. They now await the outcome of the tie between St Johnstone and Livingston, a match abandoned in the 79th minute at Perth due to fog.
Paul Hegarty maintained the defensive formation employed last Saturday against Partick Thistle with Kevin McGowne and David McCracken the central defensive partnership and Jamie McCunnie and Stuart Duff in the wing back berths. Mark Wilson returned to the side in midfield.
UNITED: GALLACHER, MCCUNNIE, MCGOWNE, MCCRACKEN, DUFF, WILSON, EASTON, MILLER, MCINTYRE LILLEY, THOMPSON SUBS: COMBE, PATERSON, HAMILTON, O'DONNELL, LAUCHLAN
The first half honours went to the home side although Thompson missed a penalty a minute before the interval. United were a different proposition after the break and dominated with the Lanarkshire version of United rarely able to get out of their own half. Tommo made amends for his earlier miss with two well-taken goals that earned him the man of the match award. Airdrie United pulled back a consolation goal just on full time through Vella but it was too late to get back into the match and the Tangerines moved into the next round.
